SAP recently launched its SAP HANA solution, an in-memory transactional database technology optimized for real-time SAP database queries and reporting. With this new technology, SAP users can get big data working for them, with insights that come faster and are more actionable than what they have seen ever before.

To show how fast this technology works, here’s this example: A consumer products company using SAP HANA was able to analyze current point-of-sale data—including segmentation, merchandising, inventory management and forecasting information—digesting 50 terabytes of data from 460 billion records at 70 retailers in just 0.04 seconds. That’s fast!

What does it take to achieve this speed? A typical SAP HANA appliance has three major parts:

1. Intel-based multi-core processors

2. Low-cost, low-latency memory (RAM)

3. Data storage: Often SAN, local storage or IBM’s GPFS system

When getting started with SAP HANA, you may want to begin with a single-node HANA for development, or you might choose to adopt a multi-node appliance for added flexibility as needs change in the future.
